3 Signs You're in Need of Auto Brake Services

May 21, 2024

Your vehicle’s brakes are one of its most important mechanical systems. That said, even the best brakes don't last forever. Did you know that, according to Progressive, brake pads should be replaced every 30,000 to 35,000 miles? Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. Here are three signs that you need to take your car in for an auto brake service.

1. You Hear Noise When Braking

Brakes should work silently, but bad brakes will make metallic sounds when you use them. The metallic sound often starts as a squealing sound when you are backing up or slowing down, but it gets louder and worse if you ignore it. Overly worn brake pads cause a squealing sound when the friction material is worn down to the rivets that hold the pad in place.

2. You Feel Pulsating in the Brake Pedal

Disc brakes have hardened steel rotors that the brake pads grip to slow your vehicle to a safe stop. The rotors can heat up and warp slightly when you do a lot of in-town driving and use the brakes a lot. One or more warped rotors can cause the brake pads and brake pedal to pulsate due to one or more rotors being warped or having an uneven surface. Replace the defective rotor or turn it to restore a flat and smooth surface and stop the brake pedal from pulsating.

3. You Have to Pump the Brakes to Stop

Another common sign that a vehicle’s brakes need servicing is when the brake pedal feels spongy and you have to pump the brake pedal to get any stopping power. The problem might be a defective master cylinder, a leaking brake line, or a defective caliper. You might notice brake fluid dripping onto the ground or accumulating on the inside of one of the wheels if brake fluid leaks from a caliper or brake line. An
auto brake service can diagnose and fix the brakes.
